Responsibilities
Responsibilities are varied and include:
- Assisting with the design and installation of new network systems to extend the capacity and functionality of Narrowstep's Internet video services
- Supporting and improving the existing server and network infrastructure to maintain system availability and quality.
- Monitoring and maintaining system security
- Recommending and implementing improvements to increase system functionality, resilience & reliability
- Working with the Narrowstep software development team to improve core Narrowstep products
- Share of on-call rota to provide out-of hours 3rd line support
Skills & Experience
This role requires a good understanding of Microsoft systems and the underlying hardware and network infrastructure. Experience at the OS/application or network level only is not sufficient for this position.
- Minimum of four years experience designing, deploying and managing large-scale networks, ideally with a focus on Microsoft technologies
- Previous experience working for an ISP or with a public IP network including knowledge of data centre environments
- Demonstrable hands-on experience installing and supporting the following:
- Cisco routers and switches (experience with Cisco IOS essential)
- Microsoft Windows XP/2000/2003 servers & desktops
- Web technologies and applications (IIS, .NET applications)
- Firewalls (Juniper Netscreen)
- In-depth understanding of DNS and related infrastructures
- Experience with the following would be a distinct advantage
- Network troubleshooting - including network packet analysis tools (e.g. tcpdump, wireshark)
- System monitoring and reporting - especially using WMI and SNMP
- Data centre consolidation
- Automated server deployment - scripting & automation
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Windows Media Services
- Previous experience working with highly available or disaster recovery infrastructures including clustering and load-balancing scenarios
- Detailed understanding of best practice network management techniques
- Excellent problem solving skills
- Strong written and verbal skills and excellent interpersonal skills
